Where does the time go between the folders?
A proposed study of the hidden cost of finding the right information.
BIMTA editorial · Reviewed 20 October 2026 · Original commentary, not a completed research finding.
Information can exist and still be difficult to use. A file stored in the wrong place, unclear revision status or a missing decision can interrupt the next person’s work.
The proposed Hidden Costs of Digital Storage study asks participants to record how long it takes to locate the information needed for a defined task. It will distinguish search, verification and rework.
The initial recruitment target is five companies with roughly five participating roles per company. These are targets, not current participation figures.
The intention is to compare workable alternatives and turn the findings into practical guidance. No findings or savings are claimed before the study is completed.
Measure the journey from needing information to trusting it.
